Official: Arsenal youth product James Olayinka released by EFL club
Published: April 30, 2024With a statement on their official website, EFL club Cheltenham Town have announced their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season.
James Olayinka, a graduate of the Arsenal academy, is one of the players let go by The Robins, who are set to compete in the fourth tier of English football in the 2024-2025 campaign after being relegated on the final day of the season.
The London-born midfielder joined Cheltenham Town from Arsenal in August 2022 on a permanent contract
He received only two call-ups for first team games during his time at the Emirates Stadium - against Standard Liege in the Europa League (December 2019) and Liverpool in the Community Shield (August 2020).
Olayinka totaled 43 appearances in all competitions for Cheltenham Town, registering a goal and three assists.
The 23-year-old spent time on loan with Northampton Town and Southend United as an Arsenal player.
He found game time hard to come by this season, making just four starts from a possible 46 in the League One and was involved in all the matches played by the club in Cup competitions with the exception of the FA Cup third round defeat at AFC Wimbledon, where he was an unused substitute.
His only goal for Cheltenham Town came in a 2-1 victory over Cambridge United on February 14, 2023.
