'Greatest success of our careers for me and the team' - Germany CB Odogu ahead of U17 World Cup final
Published: December 02, 2023VfL Wolfsburg central defender of Nigerian descent David Odogu has admitted that reaching the 2023 Fifa U17 World Cup final with Germany is the greatest achievement of his career to date.
Exactly six months after they faced off in the final of the European U17 Championship, Germany and France will lock horns once again to decide which country is crowed the winner of the Fifa U17 World Cup.
To qualify for Saturday afternoon's showpiece, Germany defeated Argentina 4-2 on penalties after an enthralling 3-3 draw.
At the U17 World Cup, Odogu has been a key player for the Germans, starting five games and was substituted in once.
Blessed with aerial ability and positional play, the 17-year-old has prevented the opponents from scoring several times at the World Cup by blocking shots or clearing the ball on the line.
On his anticipation and excitement before the big finale, Odogu said to the official website of the German Federation: "The anticipation for Saturday is huge. We are all happy that we made it to the final.
"It is something very special and extraordinary. Now we want to get the game on our side and win.
"I think reaching the final is the greatest success of our careers for me and the team. It's normal for there to be a certain amount of tension and excitement, otherwise it would be strange.
"The closer the kick-off gets, the more the tension increases."
Germany are aiming to become the fifth different European team to win the Fifa U17 World Cup after Soviet Union (1987), France (2001), Switzerland (2009) and England (2017).
Soviet Union and Switzerland defeated the most successful team in Fifa U17 World Cup history, Nigeria to win the competition.
