Arsenal's Nigeria-eligible striker named in Denmark U16 squad despite Young Lions debut
Published: March 23, 2023
European nations England and Denmark continue their battle for the services of Arsenal youth team striker Chidozie Obi.
Born in the Danish town Glostrup, Obi also qualifies to represent the Golden Eaglets through his Nigerian father, Prince Obi.
Obi has been named in the latest Denmark U16 squad for the prestigious Montaigu Tournament, which will take place in France from 31 March - 11 April 2023.
The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Kylian Mbappe (France), Gheorghe Hagi (Romania), Thierry Henry (France) and Marcel Desailly (France) featured in the tournament in the past.
England were thought to be in pole position in the race for Obi after he was named in the squad for the UEFA Development Tournament in February and handed his first cap for the Young Lions against Scotland U16s.
The 2007-born player made his debut for Denmark U16s at the age of fourteen and has totaled five appearances for the age group, scoring two goals.
Arsenal saw off competition from London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur to sign Obi and the promising striker is expected to put pen to paper a scholarship deal with the Gunners on July 1, 2024.
