Two things to like from Ebiowei's performance against Manchester United
Published: July 19, 2022
Manchester United and Crystal Palace stepped up their pre-season preparations for the upcoming Premier League season with a fiesty-friendly match at the Melbourne Cricket ground in Australia.
Patrick Vieira's men suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of new manager Erik Ten Hag's team with Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford getting on the score-sheet.
Nigeria-eligible Crystal Palace's new boy Malcolm Ebiowei who was signed earlier in the transfer window made the starting line-up. It is important to note that the tricky winger rejected an offer from Manchester United to move to Palace.
While he performed well against the Red Devils, he was unable to prevent his team from suffering such a huge loss. However, there were lots to like about his performance which allnigeriasoccer.com will be taking a look at two of them below.
Burst
While it is good for players to possess speed, it is not the most important. However, it is now a necessity for wingers to possess a good burst.
Ebiowei displayed this, particularly in a one-on-one situation against Manchester United midfielder Fred.
A good burst helps wingers to create extra space between them and defenders, especially in isolated situations.
Decisiveness
One of the common problems that young attacking players face is decisiveness. They are usually undecided in deep attacking areas and that little hesitation helps defenders take the ball off them.
Ebiowei does seem different though. In the 21st minute of the game, Ebiowei came close to netting an equaliser after some lovely footwork to beat the United defenders.
However, De-Gea denied him. Despite the shot being parried, it showed how decisive Ebiowei was, with no hesitation, and full conviction in what he wanted to do.
This is one of the base attributes of top-quality wingers and the Nigerian is showing it. While his team did not get the best result against United, Ebiowei has shown that their is a lot to come from him.
