Chelsea's United States tour : Anglo-Nigerian midfielder departs first team training camp
Published: July 19, 2022
Through their official website, Premier League side Chelsea have confirmed that Faustino Anjorin is one of four young players who have departed the first team's training camp in the United States.
The Anglo-Nigerian midfielder, Billy Gilmour and Harvey Vale will continue pre-season preparations with the development squad which is playing in a five-team tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, while Armando Broja has returned to Cobham due to injury.
Anjorin is now in contention to play for Chelsea U21s when they tackle Real Monarchs (July 19), Wolverhampton Wanderers (July 21) and Toronto FC II (July 23) in the inaugural MLS Next Pro Invitational.
The England U20 international of Nigerian descent was originally named to Chelsea's twenty nine-man traveling squad to the United States but was frozen out of the matchday squad in the 2-1 win over Club America at the weekend.
Manager Thomas Tuchel explained that Anjorin and the two other youngsters trained on a very high level but took the decision to axe them from the first team roster because he wanted to keep the quality high in training.
Since the appointment of Tuchel as Chelsea boss in January 2021, Anjorin has played just once for the first team and the solitary appearance was against Barnsley in the Emirates FA Cup.
The 20-year-old was a reserve option in matches against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, Fulham and Arsenal in the Premier League but wasn't given minutes.
