Arteta names two Nigeria-eligible young stars in Arsenal's matchday squad against Wolves
Published: February 10, 2022Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta selected two Nigeria-eligible
youngsters in his matchday squad for the Premier League meeting with
Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium on Thursday night.
Zach
Awe, 18, has received his first-ever call-up to the Arsenal first team
for a competitive fixture and the central defender is joined on the
bench by promising 20-year-old goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo.
Awe
was involved in the Gunners final workout at London Colney before the
trip to the West Midlands and must have made an impression on Arteta to
be picked in the matchday squad.
The Hale
End Academy product was on target in his last outing for the Arsenal
youth teams, against Chelsea in a Premier League 2 clash last Friday.
Against
Wolves, Okonkwo will provide cover for Aaron Ramsdale between the
sticks and it's the ninth time he has been selected in a matchday squad
by the Spanish football tactician.
Both Awe and Okonkwo, who are on professional contracts at Arsenal, have played non-binding matches for England youth teams.
Midfielder Miguel Azeez has been left out of the matchday squad though he trained with the first team on Wednesday.
