Arsenal's Nigerian defender suffers injury on U23 duty, a day after training with first team
Published: October 30, 2021Arsenal are sweating over the fitness of Nigeria-eligible defender Mazeed Ogungbo ahead of their next Premier League 2 fixture against Leicester City.
Ogungbo, who is provisionally cap-tied to the Republic of Ireland, was substituted after 24 minutes as Arsenal came from behind to secure a 4-2 win over Leeds United U23s on Friday evening, and it has come to light that it was an injury-enforced change.
The Irish-Nigerian was one of three players of Nigerian descent that trained with Arsenal's first team on Thursday, the others being midfielder Tim Akinola and fullback Ryan Alebiosu.
Ogungbo has established himself as a key player under Arsenal U23 boss Kevin Betsy, going the distance in the nine matches contested by the club in the Premier League 2 before the visit to Elland Road.
The 19-year-old is one of the most used players in the development squad this campaign as he also went the full ninety in Papa John's Trophy matches against League Two clubs Swindon Town and Newport County.
Ogungbo signed his first professional contract at Arsenal before the start of the 2021-2022 season.
