Man Utd Hero Berbatov Expresses Concern Over The Future Of Ighalo Following Arrival Of Cavani
Published: October 07, 2020Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has expressed concern over the future of Odion Ighalo following the arrival of prolific Uruguay international Edinson Cavani at Old Trafford on transfer deadline day.
The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations top scorer has been struggling to make United's matchday squad since the start of the new Premier League season, missing back-to-back matches with Brighton & Hove and Tottenham Hotspur and has yet to make his full debut in the top-flight since joining from Shanghai Shenhua.
Ighalo has been in action for only nine minutes from a possible 270 in the Premier League without a goal to his name and could drop down the pecking order even further with Cavani's arrival.
Berbatov has opined that Manchester United would have invested in a new central defender rather than bringing in the former PSG striker which could cause a problem for Ighalo and the young strikers.
"Some will say this is a panic buy, but with the speculation of players that didn't sign, it's clear they wanted an attacking player," Berbatov told Betfair.
"Sancho may not have worked out, so they get Cavani instead, and he can score goals. The really interesting question is how it affects the young boys, and what this means for Ighalo".
Though Ighalo has been snubbed for recent Premier League matches, he is one of the first names on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's teamsheet for Cup competitions, having started against Luton Town and Brighton & Hove in the League Cup.
