Ighalo Suffers His First Defeat As A Manchester United Player As Chelsea Claim Win In FA Cup
Published: July 19, 2020Odion Ighalo suffered his first defeat as a Manchester United player as Frank Lampard's Chelsea secured a 3-1 win over the Red Devils in the semifinals of the FA Cup on Sunday evening, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The former Nigeria international started on the bench as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted for Marcus Rashford and Daniel James in attack, but was introduced in the 79th minute of the contest.
Deep into first half stoppage time, Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock when he got in front of Harry Maguire and a cheeky touch knocked the ball past goalkeeper David De Gea.
A minute after the restart, Mason Mount scored to give The Blues a two-goal buffer after another awful goalkeeping from De Gea, before an own goal by Maguire in the 74th minute put paid to the chances of United reaching the final.
Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty with four minutes left on the clock but it was only a consolation.
Ighalo, who made his 15th appearance in all competitions for Manchester United in the defeat to Chelsea, started the FA Cup wins against Derby County and Norwich City and finished as the club's top scorer in the competition with three goals.
Chelsea's reward for beating Manchester United is a meeting with Arsenal in the FA Cup final on August 1, 2020.
