In a #WorldCupAtHome Twitter trend on Friday evening, FIFA has reminisced Nigeria's round of 16 bout with Italy during the 1994 World Cup.
In the tensed game in a packed Foxboro Stadium, Foxborough, Emmanuel Amunike gave the Super Eagles an early lead but the Azzurri hit back through a double from talismanic striker, Roberto Baggio — one coming in the extra time of the game to end the hopes of the African nation on their world cup tournament debut.
The football governing body streamed the classic encounter for its followers, streaming the match which it branded '94's finest duel in Massachusetts' on YouTube.
Former PSG playmaker Jay-Jay Okocha completed fifteen dribbles during the game against Italy, a World Cup record that still stands to this day since OPTA started collecting data in 1966.
Below are some of the best reactions on Twitter,
@jonathonJ1997: Super Eagles are always fun to watch in the World Cup.
@ucee3d: I'll never forget that night #WorldCup #USA94 #NGR vs #ITA and that name: Roberto Baggio.
@IdowuJudah: In this game Jay-Jay Okocha completed the most dribbles by a player in a World Cup game.
@JesseManufor: This was an incredible match, I remember crying when we lost the game.
@pheeqy: I have never watched this game since the night of the match. My first experience of heartbreak.
@olowo_dammy: This was so memorable painful . It all lost make me disinterested in football
@goallllazo: My reputation was on the line...I was at school, in the playground telling everyone to "watch out out for Roberto Baggio, he's gonna be the best player at the World Cup" thank god he scored! He was my hero growing up and this is coming from an England 🏴 fan ☺️
@jayjayemre: Okocha had world record in this game!
@TheJohnWright: @1KWright86 remember watching this? Its on now...Yekini & Baggio 2 of my favs
@HarryPromiseHP: Was few months old when this match took place. • Austin J. J. Okocha holding the record of most dribbles completed in a FIFA World Cup till date. • Roberto Baggio with the self-styled ponytail hair, stabbed Nigeria with two late goals that ended Nigeria's fairy tale run.
@OrizuOliver: I am never going to watch this match again. Ever.! 26 years later I haven't gotten over the trauma this match caused me
@Football1989063: Nigeria were two minutes from qualifying for the quarterfinals, but Italy drew and won in overtime, but Nigeria left its mark in its first World Cup !!!
@carxeem: What a game !! 💔💔
