Arsenal 4 Tottenham 2 : Iwobi Replaced At Half-Time As Gunners Extend Unbeaten Run
Published: December 02, 2018Arsenal defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 in the North London Derby on Sunday afternoon.
Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi was in action for the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was given the nod ahead of Alexandre Lacazette, who again had to settle for a place among the substitute. The Gabonese striker had scored from each of his last eight shots on target in the Premier League, with West Ham United's Lukasz Fabianski the last goalkeeper to keep out one of his attempts back in the opening month of the season.
Referee Mike Dean pointed to the penalty spot following a handball in the box from Jan Vertonghen. Tottenham had not settled at all and that was the correct call from the official, as Vertonghen stopped Shkodran Mustafi from getting his head to Granit Xhaka's free kick.
Hugo Lloris dived one way, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slotted the ball the other. A composed penalty from the striker, giving Arsenal a lead that their early dominance in this match probably deserved.
Arsenal should have been taking one of those previous chances, which fell to Iwobi and Hector Bellerin. Lucas Torreira also fired wide from 25 yards when the ball fell kindly to him.
It was all kicking off at the Emirates Stadium asĀ Spurs levelled up in the 31st minute. Christian Eriksen dipped a free kick towards the near post and Eric Dier swooped in to glance it past Bernd Leno, who should have been doing better. Dier did not hold back with his celebrations, telling the home fans to be quiet, sparking a 30-man melee.
Harry Kane emphatically thumped the penalty past Bernd Leno for Spurs' second goal after Son Heung-min was about to get a shot away when Rob Holding lunged in - a poor challenge, leaving Dean with little choice but to point to the spot.
The Gunners went into the break a goal down after throwing away a 10th-minute lead. Aubameyang had converted from the spot to open the scoring in what was a thrilling North London derby, before Dier headed in an equaliser and Kane tucked home a penalty of his own.
Tottenham Hotspur got proceedings back underway at the Emirates Stadium. There was news of a couple of half-time changes, as Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette were on for Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Arsenal were back in front thanks to a 20-yard strike from Alexandre Lacazette! The Frenchman slipped when he got his shot away from just outside the box, but a touch off Dier put it out of Lloris' reach.
The hosts moved two goals in front of their arch-rivals through a composed finish from Lucas Torreira. Aubameyang turned provider with a through-ball for the Uruguayan, who got the better of Lloris from a tight angle.
