Rohr Makes History Vs Serbia : Fields Non-Nigerian Born Back Four
Published: March 27, 2018Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr will make history tonight if he doesn't change the starting line-up for the friendly against Serbia at the Hive Stadium in London.
There are four defenders in the starting eleven born outside Nigeria, and this would be the first time Nigeria has started a game with four foreign-born defenders.
Right-back Tyronne Ebuehi was born in Haarlem, Netherlands to a Nigerian father and Dutch mother, and is set to win his third cap for the Super Eagles, all of them in non-competitive matches which makes him still eligible to represent his country of birth.
Another defender not cap-tied to Nigeria is Amkar Perm star Brian Idowu who starts the game at left-back.
The 25-year-old was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia to a Nigerian father while his mom is half Russian, half-Nigerian.
West Berlin-born Leon Balogun was eligible to represent Germany and Italy if he had invoked the granny rule but chose to commit his international future to the Super Eagles. He starts in central defense tonight.
Bursaspor star William Troost-Ekong will partner Balogun. He was born in Haarlem, Netherlands to a Nigerian father and Dutch mother 24 years ago.
