UEFA Europa League : Iwobi Benched As Arsenal Knock Out AC Milan
Published: March 15, 2018Premier League side Arsenal have booked their place in the quarterfinal of the Europa League after coming from behind to beat AC Milan 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.
For the second straight game in the competition, Super Eagles winger Alex Iwobi watched proceedings from the bench.
Despite recording a 2-0 win at the San Siro last week, manager Arsene Wenger opted to name a strong starting line-up, however, it was the visitors that opened the scoring through Hakan Calhanoglu in the 35th minute.
On 39 minutes, AC Milan conceded a penalty after Ricardo Rodriguez pushed Danny Welbeck; the England star did not make any mistake from the spot and equalized for the Gunners.
The tie was certainly beyond the Italians when Granit Xhaka beat goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from outside the box off an assist from Aaron Ramsey to make it 2-1 on the night after 71 minutes.
The icing on the cake came with four minutes left on the clock when Danny Welbeck headed home a loose ball.
Iwobi is eleven games shy of his 100th senior game for Arsenal and he could reach that landmark if Arsenal keep progressing in the Europa League.
