Done Deal: Atlanta United Pick Up Nigeria Defender Arokoyo From Portland Timbers
Published: December 15, 2017Through their official websites, Major League Soccer outfits Atlanta United and Portland Timbers have announced that they have reached an agreement over the transfer of Nigeria national-teamer Gbenga Arokoyo.
The Five Stripes acquired Darlington Nabge and Gbenga Arokoyo from Portland Timbers in exchange for $650,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) in 2018, $100,000 in GAM in 2019, $300,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) and a 2018 international roster spot.
Arokoyo made an under the radar transfer to Portland Timbers in August 2016 but could only make one appearance for the team prior to his departure after rupturing his left Achilles tendon during pre-season training before the start of the 2017 season.
The Kwara Football Academy product links up with Nigerian duo striker Patrick Okonkwo and midfielder Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu at Atlanta United.
A central defender by trade, he numbers Mjällby AIF and Gaziantepspor amongst his former clubs.
The 25-year-old has played two international matches for the Super Eagles, against Mali and Luxembourg in 2016.
