Ekiti To Host Ayefele Primary School Tourney
Published: April 18, 2013In the spirit of giving back to the society that made one, the Ibadan based ace gospel singer, Yinka Ayefele has finalized plan to stage a soccer competition for primary school pupils in Ekiti State where the shortlisted talented ones would enjoy educational scholarship through his foundation.
The event that was initially slated to commence in Oyo State which is the base of the sponsor according to the organizing committee for the tourney has now been changed to Ekiti State due to some logistic reasons.
''Ekiti State will host the maiden edition in second week in May before the train of the tourney will now move down to Oyo and every other southwest state,'' the committee noted.
The music icon in his address to newsmen in his Music house in Ibadan said his intention is to make the soccer championship which he described as a catalyst towards grassroots sports development in Nigeria an annual event where multitude of pupils will have opportunity of expressing their talent.
He claimed to have chosen a primary school tourney because there are lots of competitions already instituted for our secondary schools and primary school, which is supposed to taken more seriously is feeling neglected.
''Most of the big names in world football today, talking of Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo all started from very early age of their lives, mostly from their primary school days.
''I think this kind ofcompetition should be encouraged as I belief is a panacea in sustaining Nigeria’s fortune in global age grade football.
''Players discovered at this formative age are trainable and would enjoy longer competitions span because it is very difficult to falsify age of such discovered players,''Ayefele noted.
