Rabiu Afolabi Delighted With League Debut
Published: March 31, 2013
Former Nigeria international Rabiu Afolabi was impressive in SønderjyskE's 5-0-win over Silkeborg on Thursday despite his lack of match practice for more than 10 months.
The 33 - year - old central defender, who played for 90 minutes, has expressed delight over his league debut for the South Jutland team.
Speaking to Danish website bold.dk, the ex Monaco stopper said: ''It was a very important victory for the club. All matches are important when you are fighting for survival, so three points and 5-0 was a very good debut for me.
'' It went okay for myself, I think. But it was the group effort, which won the fight. I did not score any goal and just did what I could. The team should be highlighted, not me. But I'm glad I did well in the game with my teammates.''
Afolabi has previously played with Lars Søndergaard in Austria and is now in Sonderjyske until the end of the season.
He has not promised to extend his collaboration with SønderjyskE when he runs out of contract in the summer.
''The Danish league is strong. Before I came here, I knew the Danish national team, and it's a team with a strong mentality, which says a lot about the domestic league. First impression of the Super League is good and I'm happy to be here.
''I worked with Lars for nearly ten years ago, and he's a good guy who has a good and disciplined approach to the game, which I like. But my focus is on helping the club to stay up in the league. What happens afterwards, I can not say anything about that now,'' Afolabi added.
Rabiu Afolabi previously defended the colors of Standard Liege, Salzburg and Sochaux.
