'I've said what I have to say' - Club legend says it's up to Chelsea to make Osimhen deal happen
Published: April 10, 2025
Chelsea icon John Obi Mikel has spoken candidly about the potential signing of Victor Osimhen by his former club.
The Nigerian striker, currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, has been in excellent form and is reportedly a target for several top European clubs, with Chelsea among those linked.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel discussed the qualities that make Osimhen a standout player.
"His hunger when he plays, the ambition when he plays is something that few players have, the arrogance he has, the feistiness he has that you need to be able to succeed in the Premier League as a top striker," Mikel explained.
The former Chelsea midfielder believes that Osimhen possesses all the necessary traits to thrive in English football, particularly at a club like Chelsea, who have been seeking to bolster their attacking options.
Mikel also expressed his belief that Osimhen could form a 'great partnership' with Chelsea's existing attacking players.
"For me, I can see a great partnership happening," he added, highlighting the striker's potential to contribute immediately to Chelsea’s frontline.
However, Mikel made it clear that, despite his strong endorsement of Osimhen, the decision is ultimately up to Chelsea.
"I’ve said what I have to say, I’ve done my part. If the club chose not to pursue it, fair enough. The player has so many options. Good luck to him, good luck to Chelsea. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen," Mikel stated, signaling that he has shared his thoughts but is leaving the next steps in the hands of the club.
With Osimhen’s impressive form at Galatasaray, including consistent goalscoring in the Turkish Süper Lig, he remains one of Europe's most sought-after strikers.
Chelsea's interest in him is well-documented, but the club has yet to make a concrete offer.
For Chelsea, securing Osimhen could be a game-changer, as they have struggled to find a reliable goal scorer in recent seasons.
As Mikel emphasized, the responsibility now lies with Chelsea to make a move.
With several options on the table for Osimhen, the Blues will need to act swiftly if they hope to secure the highly coveted forward.
