Nigeria Have One Foot In South - Africa, Battle Liberia To 2 - 2 Draw
Published: September 08, 2012The Super Eagles of Nigeria have one foot in the finals of the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa, after playing an exciting 2 - 2 draw with hosts Liberia on Saturday evening at the Samuel Doe Stadium in Monrovia.
Despite the Lone Stars taking the lead as early as the fifth minute, a goal scored by FK Smederevo defender Omega Roberts, Nigeria dominated the first half.
Chelsea starlet Victor Moses was the main threat for the Liberians. Though not on the score-sheet, he was involved in the two goals scored by the Eagles. His pass to Real Betis new signing Nosa Igiebor on 22 minutes brought the tie to 1 - 1. Four minutes later, he was hacked down for a penalty which was converted by Ikechukwu Uche.
A blunder by Vincent Enyeama gifted the Liberians the equalizer with 24 minutes left on the clock. Sekou Oliseh capitalized on lapses in the Eagles defense to fire past the Maccabi Tel Aviv custodian.
The 2 - 2 draw with Liberia puts Nigeria in pole position to qualify for the African Cup when the reverse fixture is played in Calabar next month.
