Ikpeba names four Super Eagles players, including Troost-Ekong, who had a good game v Zimbabwe
Published: April 04, 2025
Former Super Eagles striker, Victor Ikpeba, has singled out four players for their standout performances during Nigeria’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo.
Despite the result leaving the national team in a precarious position in the World Cup qualifiers, Ikpeba remained optimistic about Nigeria's chances and believes the team still has a path to qualification.
Speaking in an interview on SuperSport’s Monday Night Football and monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Ikpeba praised the efforts of Victor Osimhen, Moses Simon, Wilfred Ndidi, and William Troost-Ekong, who he felt delivered solid performances in the game.
He acknowledged that the draw was not ideal, but stressed that the team had done enough to earn four points from their matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
"I will not pick any player in this team that didn't do well," Ikpeba said, highlighting the importance of the team’s collective effort.
"I personally believe that Osimhen has been very instrumental for the Super Eagles picking four points for these two games."
Ikpeba was particularly complimentary of Osimhen, noting his commitment and attitude.
"I love his (Osimhen) attitude and commitment, he gives his all every time he plays for the national team," he said, emphasizing the forward's relentless drive on the field.
The former striker also highlighted the contributions of Moses Simon, who he described as having a “very good game.”
Ikpeba added that Ndidi, who was a pivotal presence in midfield, also stood out, while he reserved special praise for the vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong.
"Moses Simon has a very good game, Ndidi had a very good game and I think the captain apart from the error was fantastic too."
The former striker also came to the defense of Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong, despite his mistake leading to Zimbabwe's equalizer.
"I just want to appeal to Nigerians to calm down the criticism against Ekong. I think he's been a servant to the national team. He has rescued the national team severally during the nations cup and in recent years."
Ikpeba urged Nigerians to show patience and support for the players, stressing that mistakes are part of the game.
"Players can make mistakes. Automatically we're not out of it, we still have a chance, and it's for the boys to regroup in the month of September," Ikpeba remarked.
With crucial fixtures ahead, including a match against Rwanda, Ikpeba remained hopeful that the Super Eagles can still secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
