2026 WCQ: Zimbabwe defender admits Nigeria has quality but backs Warriors to defy the odds
Published: March 24, 2025
Zimbabwe defender Emmanuel Jalai has expressed confidence in the Warriors' ability to pull off an upset against Nigeria when they clash on Tuesday in Uyo for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Jalai, who made his international debut in Zimbabwe's 2-2 draw against Benin last Thursday, acknowledged the team's steady adaptation to Nigeria's weather conditions and remains hopeful ahead of the crucial encounter.
Speaking in an interview with the Warriors media team, the 26-year-old full-back extended his gratitude to German coach Michael Nees for entrusting him with the opportunity to represent his nation.
Emmanuel Jalai reflected on his Warriors debut, describing it as a good game where he was able to perform well, though he acknowledged the need to continue working hard and approach each match with focus.
He highlighted the productivity of the team’s training sessions despite the challenging heat and emphasized that adapting to the weather conditions will be crucial for their performance against Nigeria.
Jalai remains confident that the team will adjust well to the humidity by the time they take to the pitch on Tuesday.
The fullback acknowledged that the upcoming game against Nigeria will be a tough challenge but remained optimistic, noting that football is unpredictable and full of surprises.
He stressed the importance of giving their best effort and leaving everything on the pitch.
He also emphasized that while Nigeria has quality, Zimbabwe possesses talent as well, and the outcome will depend on how well they impose themselves during the match.
A win in Uyo would provide the Super Eagles with a much-needed boost as they aim for a spot in the 2026 tournament set to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
