'We always struggle' - Former West Brom defender fears for Super Eagles ahead of WCQ v Rwanda
Published: March 18, 2025
Former West Brom and Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze has voiced concerns over Nigeria’s chances of securing victory against Rwanda in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Kigali.
Nigeria has faced difficulties in recent encounters with the Amavubi, struggling in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Super Eagles played a 1-1 draw in Kigali and suffered a narrow 2-1 win in Uyo.
Speaking in an interview with allnigeriasoccer, Udeze reflected on his own experiences against Rwanda and emphasized the challenges ahead.
"I have my fears because we always struggle to beat Rwanda in their home. I have been there before," Udeze said to allnigeriasoccer.com.
"I think we played 1-1. If I remember correctly, I provided the cross that Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Obafemi Martins) scored. So, it is not always easy when we play against Rwanda."
The former Nigeria international urged the current squad to show full commitment and determination to overcome the challenge.
"However, I think Nigeria has a chance to win the game. We just need our players to give more than 100 percent.
"We see them play for their clubs and give their all. I believe if our players give more than 100 percent, then Nigeria has a strong chance to win."
Nigeria must secure a win against Rwanda to revive its hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Currently sitting fifth in Group C, head coach Eric Chelle will be hoping for a positive result to keep Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive.
