Why I chose France over Nigeria, England, Algeria - Bayern Munich dazzler explains
Published: March 17, 2025
Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise has shed light on his decision to represent France at the international level, despite being eligible to play for Nigeria, Algeria, or England.
Born in England to a Nigerian father and an Algerian-French mother, Olise had multiple options when it came to his international allegiance.
However, having already featured for France at various youth levels, he ultimately chose to commit to Les Bleus.
Olise received his first senior call-up last September for UEFA Nations League fixtures against Italy and Belgium, making his debut against Italy, and since then, he has earned four caps for France.
According to the Daily Mail, Olise's decision was largely influenced by his admiration for French football legends Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry, both of whom were his childhood idols.
"He ultimately selected France, a decision that traces back to his childhood and his mother's roots in the country," the English newspaper wrote.
"His admiration for legends Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry also influenced his choice."
Speaking to L'Équipe, Olise reflected on his multicultural background, stating, "I have a lot of different connections with Nigeria, Algeria, France, England. It's not something I think about every day. It's completely normal for me.
''I have little things from each country within me. It opened my mind, because these cultures are quite different from each other. At home, I had three thanks to my parents. And outside, it was England, where I grew up.
'I didn't have to force this mix, it was just there."
Since joining Bayern Munich last summer, Olise has enjoyed an impressive debut season, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.
