Old Firm derby: Rangers icon tells Barry Ferguson what to do to get the best out of Dessers v Celtic
Published: March 16, 2025
Former Scotland international and Rangers icon Kris Boyd has offered tactical advice to Rangers head coach Barry Ferguson on how to get the best out of Cyriel Dessers in Sunday's crucial Old Firm derby against Celtic.
Since Ferguson's appointment, Dessers has rediscovered his form and emerged as a key player for Rangers.
However, despite his resurgence, the Nigerian striker struggled to make an impact in Rangers' Europa League clash against Fenerbahce, which they won on penalties to advance to the quarterfinals.
Ahead of the derby, Boyd shared his tactical insight, suggesting that Ferguson should position Cerny and Diomande closer to Dessers to enhance his effectiveness.
Speaking on The Warm-Up, he expects Celtic to have possession, while Rangers try to hit on the break.
"Celtic will have a lot of the ball and Rangers will look to hit on the counter-attack," Boyd was quoted as saying by Rangers News.
"What worked so well for Rangers in Istanbul was the fact that Cerny and Diomande, they were closer to Dessers."
Boyd further highlighted that the presence of Cerny and Diomande in attacking positions would help Rangers create more goal-scoring opportunities and provide support for Dessers inside the box.
"In terms of Cerny and Diomande, there was more of a chance for them to get in contact [with Dessers]."
"Rangers were able to get three or four in the attack as quick as they possibly could. I would imagine Rangers will do the same at Celtic Park but it's not going to be easy."
Dessers, who had a difficult start to the season, has turned his fortunes around under Ferguson, scoring four goals and providing one assist in his last four matches across all competitions.
With a vital derby on the horizon, Ferguson will be hoping the Nigerian striker can continue his impressive form to help Rangers secure a crucial victory over their fierce rivals at Celtic Park.
