Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has reminisced about his time at Ajax Amsterdam, name-checking Arsenal's Jurrien Timber and West Ham's Mohammed Kudus as players he still keeps in touch with.
Bassey moved to Ajax in 2022 after a standout season with Rangers, where he played a key role in their run to the UEFA Europa League final, which they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt.
During his time in the Netherlands, the Nigerian international made 39 appearances, scoring once and providing five assists across all competitions.
Speaking in an interview with viaplaysportnl, Bassey shared fond memories of his time at Ajax and admitted that he misses his former teammates.
"Yeah, I actually do. I do a bit. It was nice," Bassey said when asked if he missed his time in Amsterdam.
"I miss the boys, we had a good team, a nice team. Nice guys. Obviously, I still see some of them here in the UK. (Jurrien) Timber, (Mohammed) Kudus, Edson (Alvarez). So yeah, it's okay."
The Nigerian defender also revealed that he maintains contact with several former Ajax players, adding, "Yeah, we text each other, we still speak. I still speak to Kenneth (Perez) and all the boys there (Ajax)."
Reflecting on his time at Ajax, Bassey described it as a crucial learning experience.
"Yeah, I think it was alright," he added when reflecting on his time at the club.
"It was a year to learn, a year to improve. I was able to play 40 (39) games, I was able to play Champions League so yeah, for me, it was decent."
Bassey left Ajax in the summer of 2023 to return to England, signing for Fulham.
Since his move, he has become a vital player for the Cottagers, making 55 appearances and scoring once across all competitions.
