Man Utd coach promotes 17yo Nigerian goal machine to first team training pre-Tottenham
Published: February 14, 2025
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has revealed that Danish-born Nigerian wonderkid Chido Obi-Martin is training with the first team ahead of Sunday's Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur.
Obi-Martin, the all-time highest goalscorer in U18 Premier League history, has been in sensational form since his move to the Red Devils, recording fifteen goals in all competitions.
The 17-year-old was at his best on Wednesday, netting a hat-trick to inspire Manchester United to a 5-1 win over Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup.
His excellent form has led to speculation in the English media about his potential inclusion in Manchester United's squad for their Premier League encounter with Tottenham.
In response to a question about youth-team striker Obi-Martin, Amorim stated that he is among the young players who have been training with the senior squad.
In quotes relayed by United's official website, Amorim stated: "I don’t want to say names. We have to be careful on that.
"We have problems this week, we called some young players to be in our training. We have some data evaluation. He is one of them.”
Despite his eye-catching performances for United's youth teams, Obi-Martin has yet to be called up for a first team game, with the likes of Rasmus Højlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho ahead of him in the pecking order of forwards at Old Trafford.
Obi-Martin signed his first professional contract at Manchester United in November 2024.
