Southampton boss Juric explains why Onuachu started in defeat to Newcastle United
Published: January 25, 2025Southampton manager Ivan Juric has opened up about his decision to start Nigerian international Paul Onuachu in Saturday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Onuachu, who played the entire match, could not prevent the Saints from falling to a 3-1 defeat, despite scoring the first goal.
The loss further complicates Southampton’s battle against relegation, as they remain near the foot of the table.
Since his move to England, Onuachu has faced difficulties adapting to the Premier League’s intensity and style of play.
However, the towering forward broke his scoring drought last weekend, netting his first league goal of the campaign in Southampton’s 3-2 loss to Nottingham Forest.
Juric, speaking to BBC, explained his rationale for starting the Nigerian striker:
He said: "He is training well and has lot of energy. He has been really good this week."
Despite the team’s struggles, Juric’s faith in Onuachu signals a potential turning point for the striker, who will hope to build on his recent performances and contribute to Southampton’s survival hopes.
The Saints face a daunting challenge to climb out of the relegation zone, but Onuachu will aim to use his physicality and momentum to make an impact in the coming weeks.
