'I'm excited to be back' - Sevilla forward Ejuke thrilled to return to action after 3-month absence
Published: January 23, 2025Sevilla's Nigerian winger Chidera Ejuke has expressed his delight at returning to action after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury.
The 26-year-old made his comeback in Sevilla's 2-1 victory over Girona at Estadi Municipal de Montilivi, coming on as a substitute eight minutes before the end of the game.
Ejuke's return was a welcome boost for Sevilla, who have been struggling to find consistency in his absence.
The Nigerian winger was one of the team's standout performers before his injury, dazzling fans with his impressive dribbling skills and direct style of play.
The hamstring injury, which Ejuke suffered during a league match against Barcelona on October 20, 2024, kept him out of action for 12 matches, including nine league fixtures and three Copa del Rey ties.
Prior to the injury, Ejuke had featured in nine matches across all competitions, scoring one goal and earning a call-up to the Super Eagles squad ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Libya.
"I was happy to be able to go with the team because I hadn't been in this routine for a long time, so I was happy to have the opportunity to go with the team and even more excited to have come in in the final minutes to contribute a little to the team. I felt happy, you know, it's like a good step back," Ejuke told El Correo de Andalucia.
Ejuke acknowledged that he still needs time to regain his full fitness and sharpness.
"I'm already, I think, obviously, because of how I was injured this time, for this period of time, obviously it will go little by little, but I feel good.
"What I said, I'm excited to be back now. I hope everything goes game after game and we'll see how it goes," he added.
Sevilla's next game is a clash with relegation-threatened Espanyol at home on Saturday, and everything looks like the Nigerian winger will be involved in some capacity.
Ejuke made the switch to the Spanish city of Seville last summer, following the expiration of his contract at Russian side CSKA Moscow.
