Boniface will miss Borussia Monchengladbach clash as Alonso reveals expected return date
Published: January 17, 2025Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface will miss their Bundesliga clash against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury.
Boniface, who has been sidelined since late November with a thigh injury, is making progress but is not yet ready for competitive action.
"His development is good. He trained a bit but he is not in the squad (for Saturday). He needs time to train and get fit but his development is good," Alonsotold reporters during his pre-match press conference.
Boniface has been a key figure for Leverkusen this season, scoring six Bundesliga goals before his injury.
Alonso hinted that Boniface could be in contention for next week’s Champions League clash against Atlético Madrid or their crucial Bundesliga encounter with RB Leipzig.
"There is a chance (for Boniface to play next week). We will see, we have to wait. His feeling is good. For tomorrow it is still a bit too early, but for next week, yes, there is a chance," he added.
Bayer Leverkusen are currently second in the Bundesliga standings with 38 points, trailing leaders Bayern Munich by four points.
Their seven-match winning streak is the longest in the league this season, showcasing their strong form under Alonso's management.
Leverkusen face a demanding schedule, with Saturday’s match followed by the Champions League clash midweek and a high-stakes Bundesliga game against Leipzig.
Alonso expressed confidence in his team’s depth and readiness to navigate this challenging period as they continue to push for domestic and European success.
