'They prefer to be underdogs' - Nedum Onuoha banters Man Utd in build-up to Southampton clash
Published: January 16, 2025Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has taken a critical stance on Manchester United's performance ahead of their upcoming clash against Southampton, questioning their consistency despite recent positive results.
Manchester United, who have endured a turbulent season so far, secured a commendable 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield and progressed past Arsenal in the FA Cup, despite finishing the match with ten men.
Onuoha, speaking to the BBC, highlighted Manchester United's tendency to perform well against top teams while struggling against mid-table or lower-ranked opponents.
"Manchester United faced Liverpool and Arsenal in the space of a week and looked good in both games," Onuoha acknowledged.
"But they are inconsistent and questions remain over why they can perform against some of the bigger teams and not against the ones in the middle or at the bottom of the table."
Ahead of their fixture against Southampton, Onuoha humorously suggested that Manchester United may thrive more when perceived as underdogs.
"It seems to me that they prefer to play as underdogs," he remarked.
"There was little expectation of them getting a result at Anfield and it is like the players prefer to go out and play when there is less pressure. This was the same at Arsenal on Sunday."
Despite Onuoha's criticism, Manchester United will look to build on their recent positive performances and secure a victory against Southampton.
The Red Devils' manager, Ruben Amorim, will be aiming to maintain their momentum and deflect any external criticism.
Lesley Ugochukwu and Joe Aribo start in midfield against Manchester United at Old Trafford, while Paul Onuachu has been named among the substitutes.
