'Too early' - Rangers coach explains Balogun's absence from starting lineup against Aberdeen
Published: January 15, 2025Rangers head coach Philippe Clement has clarified the decision to leave Leon Balogun on the bench during Wednesday night's match against Aberdeen.
The 36-year-old defender made his return to the squad following an injury that sidelined him for five consecutive league games.
Despite Balogun's experience and previous standout performances for Rangers, Clement opted for a defensive pairing of Robin Propper and Clinton Nsiala-Makengo at Ibrox.
Speaking to BBC Scotland, he explained that it was simply too early for both Balogun and fellow player James Tavernier to start in the match.
"Too early [for James Tavernier and Leon Balogun to start] but for sure [it's good to have them back]," Clement said.
He also highlighted the need for consistency within the team, especially with matches coming thick and fast.
"It's about creating consistency in this young group, doing it every three days. We cannot think about the next five or 10 games, we need to think about the next game. If you look too far ahead, you lose your focus," he added.
Before his injury, Balogun had made a significant impact, featuring in seventeen matches across all competitions and receiving only two yellow cards.
As he aims to reclaim his starting position, he is also keenly eyeing an invitation for the upcoming 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe as he has not yet officially retired from international football.
Rangers fans will be hoping to see Balogun back in action soon, as his contributions in defense are vital for the team's success in the current season.
