What Liverpool coach Arne Slot said about top dribbler Ngumoha after record-breaking debut
Published: January 11, 2025
After Liverpool's commanding 4-0 win against League Two club Accrington Stanley in Saturday's FA Cup third round at Anfield, coach Arne Slot faced the media, with Rio Ngumoha's historic debut being one of the key subjects he addressed.
The Dutch football tactician made a bold move, including the England youth international of Nigerian descent in the starting lineup to face Accrington Stanley.
Aged 16 years and 135 days, Ngumoha is the youngest-ever player to have represented Liverpool in the FA Cup, breaking the record previously held by Trey Nyoni.
Ngumoha's performance was marked by confident dribbling, intelligent positioning and effective link-up play with his teammates, especially in the first half.
Although the 16-year-old did not get on the scoresheet, he played a crucial role in keeping Liverpool's attack lively and effective.
Liverpool fans were so impressed with the performance of the former Chelsea forward that he received a standing ovation in the 72nd minute when he was substituted for Jayden Danns.
Ngumoha registered a game-high three dribbles, was accurate in 88.9 percent of his passes and attempted two shots.
When asked about Ngumoha becoming Liverpool's youngest FA Cup starter, Slot told ITV, as reported by the BBC: "He did well. There were a few moments where the fans could see why we think he's a talent. He is good in one-v-one situations.
"He showed a bit more in the first half than in the second half. It is nice to get your debut and get the win. It is a special day for him."
Ngumoha joined Liverpool last September after turning down a scholarship offer from Chelsea.
