Transfer guru confirms Malmo on brink of deal for son of former Super Eagles midfielder
Published: January 07, 20252024 Swedish Allsvenskan champions Malmo are close to announcing the signing of Emmanuel Ekong.
Emmanuel is the son of former Super Eagles midfielder Prince Ikpe Ekong, who was a member of the Nigeria side that finished third at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations, featuring in a group game versus Benin and the bronze medal match against Mali.
Transfer market specialist Gianluca Di Marzio writes on his website that Empoli have said goodbye to Emmanuel Ekong, who has already agreed a deal with Malmo.
Ekong is making a return to Swedish football, marking seven years since his move from IF Brommapojkarna to Empoli.
A forward by trade, the 22-year-old enjoyed loan spells at Perugia and Istra 1961 due to a lack of first team opportunities at Empoli.
Overall, he appeared in twenty-two games for Empoli, with the majority coming off the bench, and scored two goals.
Malmo have reached an agreement with Empoli to sign the tri-national player in exchange for one million euros, according to Relevo journalist Matteo Moretto.
Empoli have included a twenty percent sell-on clause in the proposed deal taking Ekong to Malmo.
Ekong joined Empoli's youth academy at a young age, steadily rising through the ranks and impressing in the Primavera team, which ultimately earned him a promotion to the senior squad.
Born in Italy to Nigerian parents and brought up in Sweden, Ekong has the option to represent any of the three countries—Nigeria, Italy or Sweden.
