Bayer Leverkusen chief reveals fit-again Boniface is a contender to return to starting XI
Published: December 30, 2024
Bayer Leverkusen managing director, Simon Rolfes, believes that the return of star striker Victor Boniface will increase competition for starting places, but he is optimistic about the striker's chances of making an immediate impact.
Boniface has been sidelined with a hamstring injury for the past eight games, but his recovery has coincided with the start of the second half of the season.
The 24-year-old's absence has not hindered Leverkusen's progress, as they have won all their games without him.
His return will provide Xabi Alonso with more options upfront, particularly with the away game against Borussia Dortmund looming.
The match against Dortmund will be Leverkusen's first game of the new year, and Boniface's involvement will be a welcome addition to the team.
His return will undoubtedly strengthen Leverkusen's attack, and his suitability for the starting eleven is unquestionable.
Rolfes acknowledges that Boniface's prolonged absence may have affected his match fitness, but he is optimistic about the striker's chances of making an immediate impact.
The competition for starting places upfront is intense, with Czech striker Patrik Schick performing admirably in Boniface's absence.
However, Rolfes believes that Boniface's suitability for the starting eleven makes him a strong contender for a starting place against Dortmund.
"He was obviously out for a long time. We'll have to wait and see," the 42-year-old told Kicker.
Before his injury, Boniface was in excellent form, scoring eight goals and providing one assist in 15 games across all competitions.
As Leverkusen prepares for the second half of the season, Boniface's return will provide a timely boost to their title aspirations.
