'We'll see' - Alonso provides update on Boniface ahead of Leverkusen's last away game of 2024
Published: December 14, 2024
Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso addressed the media on Friday, on the eve of his team's Bundesliga clash with FC Augsburg at the WWK Arena, discussing among other topics the fitness of Victor Boniface.
Boniface has been on the sidelines since November due to a thigh injury he suffered during Nigeria's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Rwanda's Wasps in Uyo.
The 23-year-old has missed the last six games contested by Bayer Leverkusen due to the ailment, including two in the Champions League.
Alonso confirmed that the Nigerian international will not be available for the trip to Augsburg, Bayer Leverkusen's final away match before the winter break.
Boniface's availability for the last home fixture of 2024, set for December 21, against SC Freiburg is yet to be determined, though Alonso has not completely ruled him out for next Saturday.
In quotes relayed by German newspaper Bild, the Spanish football tactician said: "Certainly not against Augsburg. We'll see about next week's match against Freiburg. There's still hope."
On a positive note, Boniface's understudy, Patrik Schick, will be included in the matchday squad against Augsburg, provided he passes a fitness test.
Boniface scored eight goals in fifteen appearances across all competitions before his spell on the sidelines.
