Still going strong at 36: Rangers defender Balogun named in Scottish Premiership TOTW
Published: December 09, 2024
Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has continued to demonstrate his class in the Scottish Premiership, earning a spot in Whoscored.com's Team of the Week following his stellar performance in Rangers' 3-0 win over Ross County on Sunday.
Balogun played the full 90 minutes at the heart of the defense as Rangers secured a dominant victory at the Global Energy Stadium.
The 36-year-old was instrumental in maintaining a clean sheet, contributing seven tackles, three interceptions, ten clearances, and two blocked shots.
His performance earned him a Whoscored.com rating of 8.56.
The match saw Rangers take control early, with Hamza Igamane opening the scoring in the sixth minute. Danilo extended the lead eight minutes before halftime, and James Tavernier sealed the win with a third goal, assisted by Cyriel Dessers.
Balogun's defensive prowess has been a cornerstone of Rangers' campaign this season, as the team notched its ninth clean sheet.
The Nigerian international has featured in 14 matches across all competitions, logging 859 minutes.
His performance against Ross County earned him a place in the Whoscored.com Scottish Premiership Team of the Week alongside teammate James Tavernier, Celtic's Auston Trusty and James Penrice of Heart of Midlothian.
With his impressive form, Balogun hopes to catch the attention of Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen and secure a recall to the national team ahead of the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in March.
