Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface misses training before Bayer Leverkusen v Heidenheim
Published: November 22, 2024
There are genuine concerns over the fitness of Nigeria international Victor Boniface ahead of Bayer Leverkusen's Bundesliga match with Heidenheim.
The striker was in the Super Eagles squad that suffered a historic 2-1 loss to Rwanda on Monday in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, playing for 89 minutes before making way for Umar Sadiq.
Boniface was also involved in Nigeria's 1-1 draw against Benin's Cheetahs eight days ago, logging 18 minutes after coming off the bench.
According to the online edition of the German newspaper Bild, Boniface did not train with the German champions on Thursday, amid speculation that he returned from international duty injured.
Although Bayer Leverkusen have declined to comment on the injury reports, everything is expected to become clearer on Friday when manager Xabi Alonso addresses the media in his pre-match press conference.
In January, Boniface sustained a severe muscle-tendon injury in his right adductor while training with the Nigerian national team in the United Arab Emirates ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The injury required surgery, forcing him to miss eleven league games and Bayer Leverkusen's historic unbeaten streak until April when he returned to action.
With 8 goals in fifteen all-competition appearances, Boniface is having another good season at Bayer Leverkusen and is the club's leading scorer in the Bundesliga.
