Nwakali highlights three midfield roles he can play ahead of Barnsley v Wigan
Published: November 21, 2024Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has highlighted the three midfield roles he can play ahead of Barnsley's meeting with Wigan Athletic in the English Football League One clash that is set to go down at Oakwell Stadium on Saturday.
Nwakali has played as a holding midfielder for most of his club career and that was the position he was deployed by Emmanuel Amuneke during the 2015 Fifa U17 World Cup, which was his breakout tournament.
He played in a double pivot with David Enogela as the Golden Eaglets went on to claim the title for the fifth time, the most ever in the history of the competition.
Nwakali has also been deployed as a holding midfielder by Barnsley manager Darrell Clarke, who, fortunately for him, utilizes a double-pivot system.
Speaking ahead of Barnsley's clash with Wigan Athletic, the Nigeria international revealed that he can play in multiple positions in the middle of the park.
"I can play as a ten or an eight. But most times I have played as six," Nwakali told Barnsley Chronicle.
Nwakali has only started twice for Barnsley and that was in back-to-back losses to Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers in the English Football League Trophy.
"The most important thing is the team. That comes first before individuals.
"Whatever the gaffer thinks, is best for the team. There is a lot off competition. I want to play but it’s not my decision," Nwakali stressed.
Jon Russell and Adam Phillips are the first-choice midfield pairing of Clarke at the moment, and Nwakali will need to step up his performance and fitness to displace either from the starting lineup.
