After winning recruitment battles for Man City, AC Milan, Freiburg stars, Switzerland aim to cap-tie Sohm
Published: November 09, 2024Switzerland are aiming to cap-tie Parma star Simon Sohm following his inclusion in the squad list for the final UEFA Nations League matches against Serbia and Spain this month, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Born in Zürich twenty-three years ago, Sohm qualifies to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian mother.
Four years after his first and only cap for Switzerland senior national team, manager Murat Yakin has recalled Sohm to the national team because some regular players are recovering from injuries.
Bologna defensive midfielder Michel Aebischer and FC Augsburg attacking midfielder Ruben Vargas have not been called up due to fitness issues.
Sohm is a versatile midfielder and can take on defensive and offensive roles in the middle of the park.
He has caps for Switzerland at U15, U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 levels, and made his debut for the Red Crosses in a friendly against Croatia in October 2020.
The Swiss Football Association won the recruitment battles for Manchester City centre-back Manuel Akanji, AC Milan forward Noah Okafor and SC Freiburg's Kano-born striker Junior Adamu.
In addition to Akanji, Okafor and Adamu who were eligible to represent Nigeria through their parents, the Swiss Federation won the recruitment race for Roma star Eseosa Aigbogun.
If Sohm makes his competitive debut for Switzerland against Serbia or Spain in November, he will no longer be eligible to play for the Super Eagles.
