'He can score goals' - Obi Mikel urges Chelsea to sign Man Utd-linked striker Viktor Gyokeres
Published: November 06, 2024Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has urged Chelsea to sign prolific Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyökeres to provide competition for Nicolas Jackson.
Mikel pointed out that during his time at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea brought in the likes of Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka to keep Didier Drogba on his toes.
With Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim set to join Manchester United, speculation is growing that Sweden international Gyökeres may accompany him to Old Trafford next year.
English Premier League clubs passed up the opportunity to sign the Brighton & Hove academy product before he joined Sporting CP in the summer of 2023, despite his impressive performances for Coventry City.
Gyökeres was linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer transfer window, with Arsenal and Chelsea both credited with an interest, but Sporting CP did a wonderful job to keep him.
The Lisbon club could be looking to cash in on the 26-year-old at the end of the season but would demand a hefty fee, given he has a release clause of €100 million in his contract.
Chelsea have been in the hunt for a new striker and it is worth mentioning that they tried to sign Victor Osimhen in the summer window but were unsuccessful.
Another name that is popping up in the rumour mill in recent days is Viktor Gyökeres, but the competition for the Swede is fierce, with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal reportedly eyeing him.
When asked whether Gyökeres would succeed at Chelsea, Mikel said on The Obi One Podcast: "Definitely. For me, he is a Premier League player, he's a player that suits the Premier League. He has every attribute to be a Premier League player, strong, big, quick, and most importantly goalscoring.
"He can score goals and when you look at it, his goalscoing ratio is better than any striker right now in Europe, the stats are there to back it up.
"He has been absolutely fantastic. Scoring three goals against Man City, you don't hear that often. He has been fantastic and looks a little bit like Haaland."
Viktor Gyökeres has showcased his goalscoring qualities since joining Sporting CP, netting 66 goals in 67 matches while producing nineteen assists.
