Former Three Lions winger who has committed future to Super Eagles on target in Bundesliga
Published: November 03, 2024Former West Ham winger Dapo Afolayan netted his second Bundesliga goal as FC St. Pauli defeated TSG Hoffenheim 2-0 at PreZero Arena on Saturday, November 2.
Born in London, the forward has committed his international future to Nigeria's Super Eagles over England, and is hoping to be called up to the national team by interim boss, Augustine Eguavoen.
Prior to expressing an interest to play for the three-time African champions, Afolayan earned a cap for England's C team, nicknamed the Three Lions.
Against Hoffenheim, Jackson Irvine evaded the challenge of two Hoffenheim defenders on the right before cutting the ball back for Afolayan to net with a first-time effort into the near corner.
With ten minutes to go, Afolayan, having put in a brilliant shift, made way for central midfielder Robert Wagner as FC St. Pauli sought to protect their lead.
Super-sub Andreas Albers put the game to bed in the third minute of stoppage time when he slid the ball past Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.
Afolayan was a key member of the St. Pauli side that sealed promotion to the Bundesliga at the end of last season, registering twelve goal involvements in thirty-one matches in the second tier.
His first Bundesliga goal came on September 28 against SC Freiburg, where he also tallied his only assist to date.
Afolayan is a product of the Chelsea academy and counts Loughborough University, Oldham Athletic, Mansfield Town and Bolton Wanderers as his former clubs.
