'Almost breaks Reijnders ankle' - Club Brugge icon calls out Onyedika for dangerous tackle on AC Milan star
Published: October 23, 2024
Legendary Club Brugge forward, Marc Degryse, has weighed in on Raphael Onyedika's red card during the 3-1 defeat to AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred during a fierce duel between Onyedika and Milan's Tijjani Reijnders, with both players ending up on the ground and requiring medical attention.
As the tension mounted, VAR official Christian Dingert reviewed the play, leading to a lengthy wait for players and spectators alike.
Minutes later, Referee Felix Zwayer was eventually called to the monitor, where he made the decisive decision to send Onyedika off, marking his second red card in his last four European appearances.
In an interview with HLN, Degryse expressed his strong opinion on the matter.
The retired Belgium international supported the referee's call, stating that Onyedika's tackle almost caused a serious injury to the AC Milan player's ankle.
He warned Onyedika against making such aggressive tackles in the future, even if he did manage to get the ball.
“On the images you see how Onyedika almost breaks Reijnders' ankle. He arrives a fraction too late and goes for the ball, but he does it too dangerously,” Degryse said.
"If you see this as VAR, you can do nothing but give red. You shouldn't go into a duel so fiercely so close to the center circle."
Since his transfer from Midtjylland in 2022, Onyedika has been a key contributor to Club Brugge's success.
The Super Eagles midfielder has managed two assists in 13 appearances across all competitions this season.
Moving forward, Onyedika will need to focus on improving his discipline in order to continue developing and reaching his full potential.
