'These kind of mistakes' - Hayen to hold talks with Onyedika after 2 red cards in 4 European games
Published: October 23, 2024
Club Brugge coach Nicky Hayen is set to hold talks with Raphael Onyedika over his poor disciplinary record after he received a red card in their 3-1 loss to AC Milan on Tuesday night, making it the second time in four games that he has been sent off in a European game.
The Super Eagles midfielder launched a dangerous tackle on Rossoneri midfielder Tijjani Reijnders in the 36th minute, and after a check by the VAR, centre referee Felix Zwayer gave him his marching orders.
Onyedika was also sent off in the first leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League clash with Fiorentina last season, having received two yellow cards in the game.
The 23-year-old has been one of Club Brugge's best players, but his discipline has been his biggest flaw, having now received two red cards across all competitions this season.
Speaking in his post-match conference after their clash with Milan, Hayen revealed that he was going to discuss with the Nigerian midfielder over his discipline.
In quotes relayed by voetbalkrant, he said: "We have comforted him now. Tomorrow we will have a calm conversation about it. We are also a warm club in that respect, one that does not drop players."
"That's how we're going to look for solutions together, I don't want him to change his game, but these kinds of mistakes have to be eliminated. We have to become smarter about that. It's not always easy to learn that,"
Onyedika scored three goals in the Jupiler Pro League playoffs last season to help the Blue-Black lift their 19th Belgian top-flight title and also win his first silverware at the club.
He was linked with an exit in the summer and was also ready to leave, but the Belgian giants refused to let him do so.
