'I've never seen anything like that' - Club Brugge icon weighs in on Onyedika's angry reaction to substitution
Published: October 21, 2024Club Brugge legend Marc Degryse has weighed in on Raphael Onyedika's angry reaction after he was subbed off during Club Brugge's 2-1 victory over KVC Westerlo in the Jupiler Pro League matchday 11 fixture played on Saturday.
The 23-year-old had missed the 1-1 draw with Union Saint-Gilloise before the international break due to suspension for getting a red card in the previous fixture against Charleroi and was reinstated into the starting lineup by manager Nicky Hayen.
He quickly justified his selection as he assisted the opening goal in the 4th minute, his first of the season in the Jupiler Pro League, setting up Jorne Spileers who from afar blasted the ball into the back of the net.
After Hans Vanaken had doubled the lead for the Belgian defending champions, Onyedika then committed an error which led to Westerlo reducing the two-goal deficit.
The Super Eagles midfielder gave a wrong pass to goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who couldn't beat Matija Frigan to the ball and fouled the Westerlo attacker in the penalty area.
Allahyar Sayyadmanesh then stepped up to convert from the spot to give some hope to the home side, heading into halftime.
Onyedika was replaced by Hugo Vetlesen in the 82nd minute, but the Nigerian midfielder didn't take the substitution lightly, reacting angrily to the decision to take him off.
Speaking with Het Laatste Nieuws via voetbalbelgie, Degryse expressed disappointment over the midfielder's reaction to being substituted.
"I think a coach or even a board should make it clear to Onyedika that a match like this at Westerlo was unacceptable. And then he was still angry when he was substituted.
"I have never seen anything like that from a player who plays in the '6' position."
Onyedika has failed to start just one league game this season that he has been in the matchday squad and has now made nine appearances since the start of this campaign.
