Boniface misses penalty for the first time but makes amends with game-winner v Eintracht Frankfurt
Published: October 19, 2024Victor Boniface missed a penalty for the first time in his career and scored as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in the German Bundesliga fixture played on Saturday afternoon at the BayArena.
Five minutes into the game, Junior Dina Ebimbe brought down Amine Adli, and after a review by the Video Assistant Referee, a penalty was awarded to the home side, and Boniface stepped up to take the penalty.
Unfortunately, the Nigerian forward's spot kick was easily saved by Kevin Trapp to make it the first time that he missed from the penalty spot in his career, having scored his previous nine penalties.
Bundesliga October Player of the Month Omar Marmoush then gave Frankfurt the lead from the spot to score for the sixth consecutive game in the league this term.
In the 23rd minute, Boniface was presented with an opportunity to make amends after receiving a pass in the box but his effort was saved by the goalkeeper.
Robert Andrich restored parity for the reigning German champions, slotting the ball into the bottom corner after being set up by Martin Terrier in the 25th minute.
On the stroke of halftime, Hugo Ekitike thought he had given Frankfurt the lead with a stunner but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Five minutes after the start of the second half, Terrier delivered a perfect cross for Boniface, whose header drifted over the crossbar.
The Nigerian striker eventually got on the scoresheet in the 72nd minute, taking advantage of Trapp's mishandling of Florian Wirtz's cross, heading the ball into the back of the net to score his fifth goal in the Bundesliga this season and hand Bayer Leverkusen the victory.
