Nigerian striker scores on UEFA Youth League debut for Salzburg in 5-goal thriller v Sparta Prague
Published: September 18, 2024Austrian side Salzburg began their campaign in the 2024-2025 UEFA Youth League with a 3-2 win against Sparta Prague at the
FK Loko Praha Stadium, Prague on Wednesday afternoon.
Nigerian attacker Oghenetejiri Adejenughure was handed his UEFA Youth League debut by Salzburg U19 manager Daniel Beichler.
It took him less that seven minutes to break the deadlock in his first appearance in the prestigious competition.
Adejenughure pushed the ball over the line after Edmund Baidoo lifted the ball over the Sparta Prague goalkeeper.
Six minutes into the second half, Hranos equalized for the hosts but the Austrians established a two-goal lead courtesy of Marc Striednig and Zeteny Jano.
In the 67th minute, Roman Mokrovics found the near corner to cut the lead in half, but despite Salzburg creating at least three opportunities to restore their two-goal advantage, they couldn’t find the back of the net again.
Adejenughure, who is also eligible for Austria, made a splash at the 2024 European U17 Championship, scoring four goals to finish as the second highest goalscorer in the competition, behind Portugal's Rodrigo Mora.
After the tournament in Cyprus, he was linked with Manchester United, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund, but nothing came out of it.
Adejenughure was instrumental in Salzburg’s 2023-2024 ÖFB Jugendliga U18 victory, finding the net 16 times in 20 appearances.
