Augsburg coach to make late decision on Super Eagles midfielder's potential Bundesliga debut
Published: September 13, 2024
Augsburg manager Jess Thorup says he will make a late decision on whether Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka is ready to make his German Bundesliga debut on Sunday afternoon when the Fuggerstädter face off with FC St. Pauli at the WWK ARENA.
In search of regular playing opportunities, Onyeka completed a loan move to Augsburg on deadline day, before reporting for international duty.
The Brentford loanee was unavailable for selection as Augsburg were beaten 4-0 by Heidenheim in their last game before the international break.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, Thorup confirmed that deadline day signings Frank Onyeka and Chrislain Matsima, who were recently in action with their national teams, have started full training with the squad.
Thorup said he will decide on Saturday whether Frank Onyeka, Alexis Claude-Maurice and Chrislain Matsima are ready to make their Bundesliga debuts.
Onyeka is not lacking match fitness, given that he had a proper pre-season at parent club Brentford and participated in their first two Premier League games of the new season.
In addition, the box-to-box midfielder played the last twenty minutes of Nigeria's goalless draw versus Rwanda in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Tuesday, September 10.
Following his loan move to Augsburg, Onyeka reunited with coach Jess Thorup, having played under him at Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland.
The FC Ebedei product tallied nine goal involvements (6 goals, 3 assists) in 28 matches withThorup in the FC Midtjylland dugout.
