Super Eagles midfielder tells NFF to keep Eguavoen as coach after Afconq amid quit rumours
Published: September 11, 2024
Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to retain Austin Eguavoen as coach of the senior national team.
The NFF appointed Eguavoen to oversee the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification games against Benin and Rwanda after they failed to get a substantive coach.
Despite not having ample time with the team, Eguavoen was able to guide Nigeria to a comfortable victory against Benin who had earlier beaten them in June and also secure a draw against Rwanda.
This has put the three-time African champions in a good place to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, as they sit atop Group D with four points while Benin sit second with three points, courtesy of their victory over Libya.
Ogu has urged the NFF to keep Eguavoen in his position ahead of the AFCON qualifiers in October 2024.
"Dear @thenff , Please keep coach @coacheguavoen . Give him time to keep building the team moving forward."
There have been reports making the rounds that the 1994 AFCON winner had stepped down from his position but he has since denied the reports.
The Super Eagles will next face Libya in back-to-back games in October when the qualifiers continue and the NFF are expected to have made their decision on Eguavoen before then.
