'This is the position' - Romano has his say on reports linking Osimhen with January move to Chelsea
Published: September 09, 2024Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has weighed in on the swirling rumours linking Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen with a potential move to Chelsea in January.
This comes after a recent comment from John Obi Mikel hinting at a potential move for the Super Eagles striker to Chelsea when the transfer window reopens for business.
Chelsea expressed interest in Osimhen during the summer transfer window, but the negotiations broke down despite Chelsea making around four contract offers.
The deal collapsed on deadline day because Chelsea was unable to match the current salary that the Super Eagles striker was earning at Napoli.
Mikel, in his podcast, suggested that Chelsea were very close to securing a deal for Osimhen over the summer.
The former Super Eagles captain stated that while an agreement between both parties was near, the timing of the deal prevented them from finalizing the technical details.
However, he suggested that a move to Chelsea in January could still be possible.
Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, clarified that Osimhen is currently committed to his new club, Galatasaray.
"Victor Osimhen just signed for Galatasaray. Respect for Galatasaray, not just from my side but also on player's side, camp, and the player himself," Romano stated.
He emphasized that Osimhen and his camp are focused on honoring their commitment to the Turkish club.
"They want to respect Gala, focus on Gala, play for Gala, this is the position on player's side," Romano stressed.
Regarding Chelsea's interest, Romano acknowledged that the Blues still hold a strong appreciation for the striker.
"What I can tell you and I already told you last weekend, I can repeat again this week is that Chelsea's appreciation for Victor Osimhen remains absolutely," Romano noted.
He explained that Chelsea understands the complexities surrounding the negotiations in August, particularly concerning financial aspects.
"Chelsea understand what happened in the final days of August. They understand how complicated the negotiations for the player in terms of financial, in terms of salary, and in terms of contract.
"But Chelsea appreciation in Victor Osimhen remains absolutely concrete and absolutely still there."
Romano reiterated that despite the ongoing interest from Chelsea, Osimhen's priority is currently with Galatasaray.
