Published: September 07, 2024
The Super Falcons beat Venezuela 4-0 in their final group game at the Fifa U20 Women's World Cup and have now booked their place in the next round, courtesy of that brilliant result .
Coach Christopher Danjuma made two changes to the side that lost against Germany as Shukurat Bakare was replaced by Faith Omilana while Olushola Shobowale replaced Oluchi Ohaegbulem.
The Falconets got their first sniff of goal in the 11th minute when Amina Bello found the run of Chiamaka Okwuchukwu who was denied from scoring by Venezuela shot-stopper Tibayre Rodriguez.
Bello missed a golden chance to put Nigeria ahead from Jumoke Alani's pass but quickly made amends a few seconds later.
Okwuchukwu made light work of her markers before setting up the midfielder to open the scoring.
Okwuchukwu gave the Falconets a two-goal cushion with a bullet header in the 28th minute
Omilana made her first save of the game in the 39th minute, denying a powerful volley from beating her before preventing Sabrina Araujo-Elorza from getting on a rebound, three minutes before half-time.
Flourish Sabastine was initially denied from putting Nigeria in firm control of the game when Rodriguez thwarted her effort.
She eventually registered her name on the scoresheet in the fifth minute of the first-half stoppage time, pouncing on a mistake of Venezuela's defenders.
Chioma Olise, in two consecutive attempts, tried getting Nigeria the fourth goal but was denied by a defender before she was prevented by the goalkeeper.
Substitutes Mary Osigwe and Janet Akekoromowei nearly combined for the Falconets' fourth goal, but the latter's effort sailed over the crossbar.
Joel Igbokwe scored a fantastic goal just before the blast of the final whistle, precisely dinking the ball over the goalkeeper, absolutely one of the goals of the tournament.
The Falconets have now safely progressed to the round of 16, where they will face the winner of Group E on September 12 at the Estadio El Techo, Bogotá.
