'This is not a joke' - Ex-Flying Eagles star warns Super Eagles against complacency ahead of Benin clash
Published: September 07, 2024
Former Flying Eagles goalkeeper Kola Ige has issued a stern warning to the Super Eagles ahead of their crucial 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin.
Ige stressed that the team must avoid any form of complacency and remain focused to secure a decisive victory.
In an interview with allnigeriasoccer.com, Ige underscored the significance of the match on Saturday, urging the Super Eagles to give their utmost effort.
He highlighted that anything less than a win could jeopardize their position in the group.
"It is a match we have to win so that it will put us in a good position in the group, we are not even talking about a draw here, the six points must be complete," Ige stated.
"I want to believe at that this level, anybody that is called up to play the game knows that this is not a joke. Nigerians will not forgive anybody that dose not give 101 percent not even 100 percent."
Ige pointed out that other African teams are making significant strides and warned that complacency could be detrimental.
"Because all those African countries are growing and moving and everybody is aware of that. So anybody that is chosen to play on the day will give their best. I know the players will talk to themselves," he added.
He also expressed confidence in the support from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), believing it will boost the team's morale.
"And I know with the support of the NFF too, with what they have been doing and what they will do this time around too to boost the confidence of the team to ensure Nigeria gets maximum three points to put us in a good position in the group."
The Super Eagles will face Benin in Uyo on Saturday and then travel to Kigali to play against Rwanda three days later.
